The trope of this tune is Mississippi Goddam, and I mean every account book of it (Cartaxo), so said Nina Simone in 1964 when she sing this song in front of 40,000 people at a march from Selma to Montgomery.
Simone sang a song in support of the civil rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther nance wrote a letter ( earn) but each had the power to unhorse to heal the wounds of a generation. This video is a good brain wave into the happenings of the civil rights movement and how Nina Simone expressed her dissatisfaction for the times. The use of black and livid photos from the non-violent demonstrations of the 60s in the video, give the viewer a powerful flashback to the subjection during much of the civil rights movement.
Mississippi goddamn is Simones reception to two important cases in the civil rights movement. First, the murder of Medger Evers in Mississippi (Brunner). Evers, a member of the National Association for the overture of Colored People (NAACP) was involved in the boycott exertion against white merchants, referenced in Dr. Kings Letter from Birmingham Jail (Letter).



Evers was also instrumental in eventually desegregating the University of Mississippi by mentoring James Meredith through his attempt to enroll, succeeding in 1962. (James). Evers civil rights leadership and investigative work made him a target of white supremists. He was killed on his front porch with his children watching, with his ordnance full of t-shirts that said: Jim Crow Must Go.
The second event that inspired Simones protest song was the bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama, that killed four black children (16th Street). The attack on the church took place less than three weeks after the bound on Washington and marked a turning foretell in the Civil Rights movement as most of the movements study figures, notably Martin Luther King, Jr., were pushed closer to radicalism.
